In the heart of "real" Wallonia a one hectare vineyard has been created on the schist and gravel soil of a reclaimed coalmine slag heap at Herlaimont There has been other growth on this once presumed sterile soil: a near-forest of beech, oak, pine, poplar and wild cherry is firmly established, along with an orchard producing abundant peaches, pears, cherries and apples. Vine growing did in fact take place in the region in earlier times: in the 16th century there was a vineyard called "Le Vignois" at Trazegnies. To recall this piece of local history, the wine bears the name "Chateau de Trazegnies" and the crest of that noble family. The income from the vineyard is currently all being used for the restoration of the chateau of Trazegnies.
