ABBEY ROAD

The circuit starts in the south of Hainault, a few kilometres from Chimay. If you follow the Scourmont road, you will reach the Trappe, the name by which the Abbey of Our Lady of Scourmont is best known in the Chimay region.
If you head up towards the valley of the Meuse, you will eventually come to Hastière, a little town on the banks of the river Meuse. If you continue along the road to Anthée, you will see a narrow path leading to the caves du Pont d'Arcole.
Then you will reach Dinant, a little town full of charm. In a very beautiful area of the town you will find the Abbey of Our Lady of Leffe. This abbey was founded in 1152.
Then, you will head in the direction of Namur, to meet the monks of Maredsous.
Take the road to Namur until you reach the Abbey of Floreffe, founded in 1121.

ABBEY NOTRE-DAME OF LEFFE (DINANT)In 1152, Henry the Blind, Earl of Namur, gave the Church of Leffe to the Premonstratensian Order of Floreffe. The monastery that developed as a result became an abbey in 1200. It has survived its fair share of disasters over the years, having been reconstructed in the 17th and 18th centuries, and plundered by French revolutionaries in 1794. The present buildings were sold in 1816 and transformed into workshops, but in 1903 were purchased by the exiled French Premonstratensian Order and restored as an abbey. |

CITADEL (DINANT)On a cliff, more than 100 metres above the River Meuse, the citadel of Dinant offers spectacular views of the town and countryside. A fortification may have stood on this spot as long ago as the fourth century, and the Bishop Prince of Liège certainly ordered the construction of a fortress on this spot in 1051, but the present structure dates to the early 19th century. It is reached from the town either by cable car or by the 408 steps cut into the hillside. FLOREFFE ABBEY (FLOREFFE)The Abbey of Floreffe which was founded by St Norbert in 1121 towers over the valley of the river Sambre. The various buildings are grouped around the formal Courtyard and date from between the 12th and 18th centuries. The abbey church which is 100 m long contains some magnificent baroque choir stalls.
