The Porte de Hal is rather like a feudal castle whose stark outline stands proudly against the sky. A little further you might like to take a pleasant stroll down rue Jean Volders. In the shadow of the church: in the Verschueren Brewery trendy young people and more sedate habitués enjoy a beer. Also the Brasserie de l'Union offers a variegated picture of Brussels' life and characters. Other strong points: the roundabout of the Barrière of Saint Gilles and its fountain. The town hall in Renaissance style. The Brasserie de la Renaissance. Moeder Lambic, an absolute must for beer lovers… 250 beers, including numerous draught beers.

PORTE DE HAL - ROYAL MUSEUMS FOR ART AND HISTORY (BRUXELLES) © OPT-Ricardo de la Riva Very well preserved six hundred year old neogothic building. It is the only preserved gate from the Brussels medieval surrounding wall. This is due to the fact that it served as prison during the demolition of the walls in the 18th century. In 1869 architect Beyaert made some alterations that changed the primitive appearance of the building. Certain rooms are quite impressive indeed.
