After almost completely disappearing at the end of the 19th century, the Château d'Egmont in Herchies owes its survival to the major restoration work undertaken by Edmond Puissant. This château-fortress has a long history and is now occupied by a religious community. It used to be the property of a number of illustrious families and people. People have lived on the original site of the fortress for ages and ages. Objects dating back to the Neolithic era have been discovered at the site, but its history really begins in the 11th century, when the original fortress was built there by Wauthier, Lord of Lens. This initial construction was continually improved until 1325. All monumental evidence of this era has disappeared with the exception of the quadrangular layout of the current castle.
