The fortified farmhouse of Fosteau, standing proud and isolated on a plateau in the Hainaut countryside, is a 14th century walled fortress formerly reached through a drawbridge across a moat. The impressive four-sided building, flanked by pepper-pot towers, grew over the centuries with the addition of annexes and outbuildings. Sacked and pillaged in 1597, it was rapidly restored by its new owner who built new living accommodation, the west wing, whose classical façade, framed by two towers, opens onto the terraced gardens. A second lower courtyard, built in the 17th century with a stable resembling a church nave, is the setting for a Christmas market every year.
