Founded by Alix de Rosoit in 1242, the "Hôpital Notre-Dame à la Rose" was established to welcome the poor of Lessines and its surrounding districts who were unable to beg in the streets. The current building, a pleasing quadrilateral around the cloister, was altered and extended between 1517 and 1722. The façades facing the cloister alternate Gothic, Flemish Renaissance and Baroque style on different floors. A few hundred metres from the town centre, at the heart of the main building, the cloister garden is a little haven of peace. Its current design dates to the beginning of the 20th century. Since its earliest days the "hospital" has also had its own cemetery, to the south of the cloister protected by a little surrounding wall.
