Lovers of antiques, art objects, ultra chic shops and outside café tables, this is the district you've always dreamed of! This district owes its name to the sandy plain on which is was built. Close your eyes and dream: Grand Sablon dons its finery of gold and glitter during the Christmas holidays, and then it becomes one of the most remarkable place in the city. The proximity of the Royal Museum for Fine Arts, of BOZAR, of the Museum for Musical Instruments, of the Palace of Charles of Lorraine, of the Royal Palace and the place Royale make it a special place for exploring. One of its chapels is devoted to the memory of Pieter Breughel the Elder and his wife, Marie Coucke. CHURCH OF NOTRE-DAME DU SABLON (BRUXELLES) © Karina Nestler In 1304 a small chapel was built by the city's crossbowmen on the then empty square. In the 15th century, the chapel was rebuilt and then given lasting legitimacy by the attendance of leading figures from the aristocracy. In the 15th century, the area was one of the most attractive and festive in Brussels. Today the church is seen as a remarkable example of the Ogival style in the city. Inside, the central nave is illuminated by 11 stained-glass windows measuring 15 metres in height. MONT DES ARTS (BRUXELLES) © Région de Bruxelles Capitale & LMRC asbl. The garden of the Mont-des-Arts, a “Visual Springboard”, designed by René Pechère, is layed out on a slab, covering a car park. In front of the Convention Centre, a fountain with nine steles constitutes the main point of the garden. The flights of stairs that take us to the garden are adorned with reliefs by Oscar Jespers, Charles Leplae and Rik Poot. ROYAL MUSEUMS OF FINE ARTS : MUSEUM OF ANCIENT ART (BRUXELLES) The Museum of Ancient Art has got a vast collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings from the 15th until 18th century.
