A trip along a wonderful RAVeL route into the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, via the Mardasson Memorial and the exceptional Bastogne War Museum.
This RAVeL route opens the door to a secret corner of the Pays de Bastogne. After leaving the town centre, we’ll be riding in absolute peace. On this greenway the hills are minimal (barely more than 2.5%): the incline was calculated to permit trains to tackle the change in altitude between Bastogne and Wiltz.
Following the track once taken by small local trains, we go from station to station to station, passing the hills through tunnels, following the secret valley of the River Wiltz and crossing the river on marvels of civil engineering.
We encounter landscapes the likes of which we never could have imagined. While on the outward route we head towards the Grand Duchy on a gently descending slope, on the return by contrast we are faced with a long and slow climb.
At the end of our journey, the RAVeL brings us back to the Mardasson Memorial and the Bastogne War Museum, which honour the sacrifi ce of American soldiers and recall the suffering of the civilian population during the Battle of the Ardennes (or Battle of the Bulge) at the end of December 1944. The museum constitutes also a powerful advocate for peace.
