BUVRINNES is noteworthy for its "green" side, its many chapels and crucifixes and its great number of large 18th century farms. RAGNIES is mainly noteworthy for its building heritage, especially its large farms in limestone and brick. Around GERPINNES, there are various villages with different features. Fromiée, the smallest village of the group consists mainly of rural dwellings constructed with limestone blocks. In the same way, the centre of the hamlet of Hymiée is made up of limestone houses. BOUFFIOULX is located to the north-east of Charleroi. Most of the houses in the centre of this little village are built in local stone. Bouffioulx used to be internationally known for its pottery.

The construction of this tower -which from the beginning served as a belfry- was decided by the town and the chapter in 1639. It was the capitular as well as the communal tower of the Collegiate church Saint-Théodard. The belfry belongs to the Unesco World Heritage. Trilingual panels, a film, cameras, … relate to you the history of Thuin and its belfry. To help you during your ascent, an audio guide will explain to you the mechanism of the clock, the bells, the carillon… At the top, 4 niches unveil an unrestricted view on the valleys.

THUIN AND THE ABBEY OF AULNE (GOZEE)

    © Alex Kouprianoff
Hidden in a steep valley on the right bank of the Sambre river, it is rightly called "Valley of Peace". Its alluvial soil and incomparable riches offers the monks all kinds of wealth. The Sambre river gives them an inexhaustible water reserve, a perfect way of transport and a huge hydraulic source of energy. Therefore they constructed sophisticated hydraulic devices. A haven of peace, where it is good to live… The old vegetable garden, which has been redeveloped recently, was the courtyard of the former infirmary and the garden with medical plants was located at the place of the house of the caretaker. It was also an important source of energy.
