The arboretum was created during the 1930s by Mr Lenoir, on a site containing a water mill fed by a little canal from the Ourthe. Gradually little islands formed, giving the site its characteristic charm. Lenoir's main interest was in collecting rare exotic species rather that in organising them or structuring the park, and this too has added to the untamed appearance of the arboretum. The site is of unrivalled botanical interest, with many woody species and an impressive collection of trees. There are today 4,300 trees of 1,400 different species, including service trees, maples, spindles and flowering trees.
