Weaving together art and history
Tournai is a historic city above all else: from the moment Clovis was born here, it was the cradle of the Merovingian dynasty, and the capital of the Salian Franks until Clovis left for Soissons and then Lutèce.
You only have to look at its heritage to understand its ancient history: the oldest BELFRY of Belgium, its huge CATHEDRAL OF NOTRE DAME OF TOURNAI (5 church towers and UNESCO world heritage), its MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS designed by Victor Horta, Belgian Art Nouveau master. Art lovers will delight in the many treasures of Rogier de le Pasture, Manet, Monet, Seurat, Van Gogh.
Paved alleys, charming small squares, the river Escault and the "PONT DES TROUS"... You will always be led by one or the other statuette with a great story behind it. And should you get lost along the way, there are plenty of outdoor cafés where you can stop for a drink.
