It was the capitular as well as the communal tower of the Collegiate church Saint-Théodard. The belfry belongs to the Unesco World Heritage. Trilingual panels, a film, cameras, … relate to you the history of Thuin and its belfry. CASTLE OF MONCEAU-SUR-SAMBRE (MONCEAU-SUR-SAMBRE)

© FTPH - c. Carpentier
The castle of Monceau has been a seignorial domain since the 17th and 18th centuries. The entrance building comprises a square baroque porch dating from the 17th century. On either side are two wings that were redesigned in the 19th century, each of which is completed by a tower. Not much is known about the history of Monceau before the 15th century. Destroyed in 1554 it was rebuilt after 1607 and became the property of the family of Trazegnies, Hamal and de Gâvre. In the 19th century, the western wing is remarkable because of its classical view, in Louis XVI style. The addition of this wing allowed the creation of an honorary courtyard. This residence is surrounded by a superb 67 hectares park designed by an architect from Versailles (remarkable trees).

RUINS OF THE PALACE OF MARY OF HUNGARY (BINCHE)

© Monsieur Guy Durieux
The chateau of the Counts of Binche was in a state of sorry dilapidation when Marie of Hungary decided to build a magnificent palace in its place to rival the aristocratic palaces of France. Building began in 1545 under the direction of Jacques Dubroeucq, and almost five million bricks were used. Completed for the visit of the Emperor Charles V and his son, the palace was burned down five years later by the troops of Henry II of France. The site was listed in 1936 and is currently the subject of an extensive programme of archaeological excavations on the site of the 18th century municipal park. The covered way along the old ramparts offers an unsurpassed view over the surrounding countryside.

The Sambre river gives them an inexhaustible water reserve, a perfect way of transport and a huge hydraulic source of energy. Therefore they constructed sophisticated hydraulic devices. A haven of peace, where it is good to live… The old vegetable garden, which has been redeveloped recently, was the courtyard of the former infirmary and the garden with medical plants was located at the place of the house of the caretaker. It was also an important source of energy.
